Santa Lucía book presentation in Guatemala City

24/04/2012 - On Wednesday the 25th of April a book with testimonies from survivors of the 36-year internal conflict (1960 – 1996) is presented in Guatemala City. This book, that was presented last year in Haarlem, the Netherlands, is thus shared with a large public in Guatemala that includes actors from the international community and civil society.

The book describes the harm suffered by people from Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, a town at the south-coast from Guatemala, where more than hundred community leaders were either killed or forcedly disappeared during the internal armed conflict. The testimonies are told by family and friends and give an insight in the lives of thirty victims, their fight for a more just society, the act of forced disappearance or murder and the effects this had on the lives of those that stayed behind.

With the book, that contains impressive old and new photos, the survivors want to dignify the lives, convictions and actions of their loved ones and contribute to the historical memory of the country.

On the 2nd of November the book was already shared with family-members and closely involved organisations, in an intimate ceremony in Santa Lucía. A short film of that presentation can be seen on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzZLizcGB8M
