Impunity Watch Research Brief: Memorialisation in Burundi

07/06/2012 - Research Brief: Lieux de mémoire, commemorative initiatives and memorials to Burundi’s conflicts: Invisible and permanent memories

As Burundi begins to take steps to deal with its violent past, the study of memorialisation in the country will become increasingly important. A commitment by the authorities to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) by the end of 2012, including proposals for the re-writing of Burundi’s history and the establishment of new memorials at the national, provincial and local levels, point to this importance. Examining this potential, Impunity Watch’s latest Research Brief provides an initial insight into memories of violence in Burundi.

Based upon research conducted around various memory initiatives in Burundi, the Research Brief summarises the key findings from the full Research Report, which will be made available in the coming months. In addition to Burundi, research as part of Impunity Watch’s Memorialisation Project was undertaken in Cambodia, Guatemala, Bosnia-Herzegovina and South Africa. The research project analyses the links between various types of memory initiatives and truth, justice, reparations and the non-recurrence of violence.

A Comparative Analysis of this research will soon be available and will be published on www.impunitywatch.org.
