IW Serbia Joins Regional Youth Conference

20/11/2008 - In light of the key role young people can have in challenging the norms, values and beliefs that allow grave violations of international law to occur with impunity, Impunity Watch helped its partners, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) and the OSCE Mission to Serbia, organise the Regional Youth Conference on Facing the Past.

Held on November 20 in Belgrade, the event’s aim was to initiate a regional debate among youth organisations from the Western Balkans on attitudes towards facing the past and activism for accountability.

The participants concluded that youth organisations, by strengthening their links across the region and focusing on unique goals, can exert pressure on their governments to establish the truth about crimes committed between 1991 and 2000 and the destiny of over 17,000 persons still missing. The importance of the RECOM initiative, which seeks to establish a regional truth-finding commission, was stressed, with the caveat that it should not be seen as an alternative to war crimes prosecutions.
