Wife of Guatemalan Ombudsman kidnapped and tortured
03/04/2009 - On 25 March Gladys Monterroso, the wife of the Guatemalan Human Rights Ombudsman, Sergio Morales, was kidnapped and tortured. She was snatched from outside a restaurant by three armed men in balaclavas and held for 20 hours before being dumped on the outskirts of the city. Morales appeared in front of the press in tears the following day to provide information about the attack, which follows a recent upsurge in threats and intimidation against staff of the Ombudsman’s office. The office had just made public a police archive discovered in Guatemala City, covering the period 1975 - 1985 and thought to contain proof of the illegal detention, torture and execution of civilians by state security forces. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has asked the government to take immediate action and issued an urgent press statement this week.
