Impunity Watch Discusses Guatemala on Radio VPRO 1
28/02/2011 - Impunity Watch Director Marlies Stappers appeared as a guest on the Dutch Radio 1 VPRO show, 'Bureau Buitenland' (Foreign Affairs Bureau) on February 27. Invited to comment on the situation in Guatemala in light of the Dutch government's plans to close its embassy there, she emphasised the importance of retaining it on the international development agenda.Among the issues she discussed was the threat posed to the country's stability by drug gangs, explaining their linkages with the better-known drug problems in neighbouring Mexico. In this regard, she pointed out that the Netherlands has played a vital role to date as an advocate for the rule of law in Guatemala, not least by supporting the work of the UN-sponsored Commission Against Impunity (CICIG). Dicontinuing bilateral relations now would jeopardise the work of that unique body and the position of those who courageously advocate respect for human rights in this fragile state.
