Impunity Watch Applauds Mladic Arrest

26/05/2011 - Impunity Watch applauds the efforts of the Serbian government and intelligence services that resulted in today’s arrest of ICTY fugitive Ratko Mladic. This is a clear indication of Serbia’s willingness to deal with the past and combat impunity for human rights abuses committed during the 1990s, and constitutes an important step towards the country’s EU integration.

While the arrest of Mladic represents significant progress in combating impunity in Serbia, Impunity Watch wishes to remind the Serbian authorities, civil society organisations and the international community of the importance of remaining committed to a comprehensive impunity reduction agenda, which requires the reform of state institutions, support for existing truth-seeking initiatives and addressing the war-crimes denial that still prevails among the general public.

Impunity Watch is a Netherlands-based organisation that promotes accountability for past atrocities in countries emerging from a violent past. We work together with national civil society groups to produce research-based policy advice, monitor levels of impunity and advocate for tailored policy solutions.
