IW welcomes Karadzic arrest

22/07/2008 - The arrest of the former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is a welcome move by the Serbian government, and an important step in fulfilling the right of the victims of Bosnian war to justice, Impunity Watch said in a press statement released in Belgrade on July 22.

In a statement co-signed with a number of Serbian human rights groups, IW expressed hope that the move will mark the beginning of a fundamental change in Serbian state’s attitudes towards its recent past, and that similar moves in the future would be the result of a genuine wish on the part of the Serbian government to act in accordance with the highest international standards, rather than being a response to the political pressure by the international community.
“We expect that the Serbian government will demonstrate its genuine commitment to fulfilling its international legal obligations by arresting the remaining two fugitives, including the former Bosnian Serb Army commander Ratko Mladic, as well as by conducting thorough investigation of the networks that have protected them, “ said IW Serbia programme manager Ana Uzelac.
