WHAT WE DO

SPECIALISED RESEARCH

Using a specialised, in-house developed research methodology, IW researches the obstacles to overcoming impunity in selected post-conflict societies. This research is done jointly with the Impunity Watch national partners, whose staff participates in the data gathering and analysis on daily basis, working together with and receiving hands-on training from IW country representatives. On partners’ request, IW also provides specialised in-house trainings on research or organisises trainings by outside experts. The results of this research are used to identify the obstacles to accountability in selected countries and to inform IW policy proposals.

MONITORING

IW aims to assist national civil society partners in their efforts to monitor state actions to reduce impunity. This includes also monitoring of state performance against legal obligations to investigate, prosecute and provide effective remedies to victims of past crimes and human rights violations. Results of our research can provide a basis for such continuing domestic-led oversight.

TARGETED POLICY

The results of IW-led research can be used to assist partners in identifying and formulating policy approaches targeted specifically at eliminating obstacles to accountability in their respective countries. In the process of formulating these policies, we aim to engage all relevant constituencies, from victim groups and civil society organisations to experts, legal professionals and policy-makers. In this way we hope to reach across the government – civil society divide. We also hope to assist national policy makers and the international community to focus their intervention strategies, make the best use of their resources, and avoid the one-size-fits–all approach.

ADVOCACY

IW also aims to increase civil society capacity to advocate for the policy proposals stemming from their research and monitoring work. This includes conducting joint advocacy and lobbying campaigns, providing specialised trainings and strengthening partners' national and international networks. Together with our national partners, we use research results to create and advocate for the implementation of policy proposals targeted specifically at the root causes of impunity and tailored to national circumstances

CAPACITY BUILDING

IW aims to achieve a sustainable domestic capacity for research, policy-making and advocacy, and promotes civil society oversight of state actions on accountability.
