Frances Topham Smallwood joined Impunity Watch in April 2019 as MENA Programme Officer, with a focus on Iraq. Previously, she worked in Lebanon with UMAM for Documentation and Research, Civicus, Search for Common Ground and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung on projects relating to political imprisonment, enforced disappearance, social cohesion, and refugee politics in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and the wider MENA region. At the EMHRF, a foundation supporting human rights defenders, she oversaw programming in support of human rights activists and civil society actors working on documentation of human rights violations and accountability in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt. She has a background in policy and media analysis, and she speaks Arabic and Spanish. She holds an MSc in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam and a BA in Oriental Studies from the University of Cambridge, and is pursuing studies in International Law at the Université catholique de Louvain.
