During times of war, women are frequently targets of sexual and other forms of violence, often systematically perpetrated. However, their needs tend to be neglected in the aftermath. The international community has shown willingness to deal with violence against women, but it has proven difficult to challenge the persistant gender prejudices that help perpetuate impunity for such crimes.
