Are you ready for the Billboard Music Awards? The show will broadcast live coast-to-coast from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 15, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC, and will stream live on Peacock. Hosted by two-time BBMA winner Sean “Diddy” Combs, the show will honor the year’s top artists on the Billboard charts in 62 categories.

A total of 16 artists will perform on the show, representing just about every type of popular music. Eleven of the performers are nominees this year, including Ed Sheeran (nine nods), Raux Alejandro, Silk Sonic, and Morgan Wallen (four nods each), and Miranda Lambert (two nods).

This will be Silk Sonic’s first performance since the duo swept four Grammys, including record and song of the year, in April; Wallen’s first awards show performance since he was caught on camera in 2021 saying the N-word; and Travis Scott‘s first awards show performance since a crowd crush during his performance at the Astroworld Festival in Houston in November killed 10 people. Sheeran will be performing from Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he’s in the midst of a stadium tour.

Maxwell will perform the Rod Temperton ballad “The Lady of My Life,” which was the closing track on Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The performance is intended as a 40th anniversary tribute to that landmark album, which was released on Nov. 30, 1982.

Mary J. Blige will receive the Billboard Icon Award, and will also perform on the show. Mari Copeny, a 14-year-old environmental justice advocate, will receive the third annual Billboard Music Award Changemaker Award.

The list of presenters includes Pusha T, whose It’s Almost Dry entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 last week; Michael Bublé and DJ Khaled, who have each amassed multiple No. 1 albums on that chart; and TV and film stars Anthony Anderson, Tiffany Haddish and Heidi Klum, among others. Unique among music awards shows, BBMA finalists are determined by performance on the Billboard charts. Finalists and winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and touring, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Luminate. This year’s awards are based on the chart period of April 10, 2021, through March 26, 2022.

The 2022 Billboard Music Awards is produced by MRC Live & Alternative. In addition to hosting the show, Combs will serve as executive producer alongside Robert Deaton. 2021 Billboard Music Awards

The 2021 Billboard Music Awards were held on May 23, 2021, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony was broadcast live from NBC, and was hosted by Nick Jonas. Musical performers were announced during a series of social media posts.

Nominees for Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Latin Male Artist, and Top Rap Female Artist were announced on April 28, 2021. The full list of nominations was presented on April 29, 2021. The Weeknd received the most nominations on the ceremony, being nominated for sixteen awards, later going on to win the most awards of the ceremony with 10 awards.

Finalists and select winners of the 2021 Billboard Music Awards were based on Billboard charts and reports from March 21, 2020 to April 3, 2021. There are two fan-voted categories; Top Social Artist, and Top Collaboration. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no awards were given for any touring category, including Top Touring Artist. The ceremony was sponsored by Rockstar Energy Drink, Security Benefit, Hot Tools, and Xfinity.

Nick Jonas was announced as the host of the ceremony on April 30, 2021. P!nk was announced as the recipient of the Billboard Icon Award and the first confirmed performer on May 4, 2021. She is the youngest recipient of the award to date, and succeeded Garth Brooks, who won the award in 2020. The award was presented by Jon Bon Jovi. Trae tha Truth was announced as the second recipient of the Change Maker Award on May 13, 2021. The award was presented by Tina Knowles-Lawson. In addition, Billboard has partnered with Trae and his non-profit organization, Angels by Nature, to create the awards show's first-ever non-fungible token (NFT). The sales opened up during the weekend of the ceremony, and all proceeds were donated towards the organization.

Although country singer Morgan Wallen earned six nominations this year, Billboard Music Awards producers announced that Wallen was not invited to attend the ceremony, due to a video released earlier this year by TMZ of him using a racial slur while with his friends in Nashville. In a statement, the production company noted, "Since his recent conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting)." The company also stated that Wallen's nominations were solely based on his Billboard charts performance.

Billboard's Top Artists of the 2010s Decade list was officially revealed on May 11, 2021. Drake ranked at number one, and was honored with the Artist of the Decade Award. Taylor Swift, who ranked at number two overall, is the top female artist of the 2010s decade.

Unlike the 2020 ceremony, which had no fans in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dick Clark Productions allowed fully vaccinated attendees (meaning they would have had their final vaccine before May 6, 2021) to attend the ceremony. Attendees would be required to show their vaccination card before entering the venue, complete wellness screenings, have their temperature taken, sit in dedicated audience seating, and wear facial coverings at all times. There was an estimated 500–600 fans in attendance.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Promotes Love, Forgiveness and ‘Uncanceling the Canceled’ at 2022 Billboard Music Awards

"You're definitely going to see a step or two; whatever I've got to do," the show's host said about the possibility of him performing on the broadcast.

Love and forgiveness. Those are the two themes that Sean “Diddy” Combs is embracing for his first-time stint as host and executive producer of the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. As the countdown to the May 15 telecast begins, the impresario has started raising the curtain a bit about what’s been happening behind the scenes.

When it was announced earlier this week that Travis Scott would be joining a performer lineup that includes Morgan Wallen, Silk Sonic, Ed Sheeran and Megan Thee Stallion, Combs noted on Instagram, “I made a request; I made a demand. I said my brother Travis Scott has to perform … And NBC said yes.”

This will be Scott’s first awards show performance since a crowd crush during his show at the Astroworld Festival in Houston last November killed 10 people. It will also be Wallen’s first awards show performance since being barred from attending and performing at various ceremonies in 2021 after he was caught on camera saying the N-word. Combs himself has appeared on the Billboard Music Awards several times dating back to 1997 when he won an award and also presented a posthumous award to The Notorious B.I.G.’s mother. During a May 6 press junket in Beverly Hills, Combs — aka “Primetime Puff” — spoke with Billboard about “uncanceling” Scott and Wallen, making the BBMAs “a family affair” and formally returning to music through his newest venture, Love Records.

What was your initial reaction when asked to be host and executive producer?

The first thing I thought was, “Why would they think that I would do that?” Then I thought again and I was like it’s because I’m the best choice. I know how to host; I know how to control a frequency. So yo, it makes sense. Also, because I’m returning to music, it’s like the biggest coming out party that you get to have live on network TV. They call me Primetime Puff, so I just jumped right into the energy.

Why is it important to you to have Morgan Wallen and Travis Scott perform?

The mood of the show is about love and forgiveness. As a musical family, none of us are saints; none of us are without things that happen to them in life. So one of the things I’m doing directly is un-canceling the canceled. That’s breaking news because people haven’t been about uncanceling. But canceling is a trend that needs to stop.

Travis went through a tragedy; Morgan [used the N-word] while talking to his boy. People make mistakes. Now we’re moving on with love and respect for everybody that was hurt or affected. It’s time to forgive. To have Morgan and Travis be able to come back and touch the stage again with the mindset of getting a second chance at life. Everybody in the room is getting a second chance at life, you know, because we’re back inside with no masks on. We need love and I’m excited about celebrating that.

I wanted to make the whole show a family affair with people that I love and respect. Like Mary J. Blige receiving the Icon Award, which is long overdue. After what she did at the Super Bowl, her performance is going to be exciting. We will have other show-stopping performances with people who are also truly into the art, including Silk Sonic, Machine Gun Kelly and Burna Boy. This is going to be a special night.

Will you also be performing?

You’re definitely going to see a step or two; whatever I’ve got to do. I’m the consummate entertainer. And if you all don’t seem hype enough, I may need to do one of my numbers back from whatever. I’ve got a catalog now, and it will get you up on your feet no matter who you are. So we’re going to see what’s up.

What one memory stands out from the first time you attended the BBMAs?

It was the first time that I rented a private jet. I took The Lox and the Bad Boy family. But we only had nine seats and there were 13 of us, all in army fatigues. So three of us had to lay on the floor the whole entire trip [laughs]. But we’d made it from Harlem and Brooklyn to flying on a private jet and going to the Billboard Awards. It was just a great time.

What do you want to accomplish through Love Records?

I’m on an R&B mission… a mission to bring back a genre of music that had employed so many musicians and writers. I also want to bring back, you know, our soul. That’s a part of our culture. Not singing and sounding like computers to the point where we lose ourselves. So I’m here to bring back the R&B magic because R&B is love.

This new album is like an R&B Super Bowl featuring artists whose voices I love, with my production and direction underneath. We also have a star-studded array of young producers and songwriters. I love collaborating. I did some stuff with London on da Track, for example, that’s crazy. We’ll be announcing more details down the line. But to do this release with Motown and [CEO/chairwoman] Ethiopia Habtemariam is a blessing and perfectly fits my narrative. It’s always been a dream of mine to work with her. And [Motown founder] Berry Gordy’s blueprint has always been such a big muse for me. I’ve just remixed and updated it.

The way your system is set up for major label artist only delegitimizes bbma. There are Independent artists working harder, more talented, doing more numbers and are not counted. Until things change I doubt real music people will take you serious. Corporations looking out for corporations.
