While the NHL playoffs continue to chug along, some international hockey involving NHL players is going on.
The 2022 IIHF World Championship is set to start Friday, May 13, in Finland with 16 countries competing for a gold medal.
Players on NHL teams that did not make the playoffs or have been knocked out may play in the tournament for their country. While it's not like the Olympics with the best players from every nation, it is still quality hockey that fans can watch when the NHL playoffs aren't on.
Some notable names in the 2022 tournament are Mat Barzal, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Thomas Chabot, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Rasmus Dahlin and Seth Jones. This year, 16 teams are participating in the IIHF World Championship. They are split up into two groups of eight.
The IIHF has suspended all Russia and Belarus national teams from competing in international tournaments, so they will not be competing in this tournament. France and Austria have taken their place. The two teams are joined in Group A by favorites Canada as well as Germany, Slovakia, Denmark, Kazakhstan and France.
It is a tough group that is highlighted by defending champion Canada. Slovakia will also be a tough out.
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice and Canada overcame an undisciplined third period in a 5-3 win over Germany on Friday at the world hockey championship.
Cole Sillinger, Kent Johnson and Noah Gregor also scored for defending champion Canada in its opening game of the tournament.
Moritz Seider, the Detroit Red Wings defenceman recently named a finalist for the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie, had a goal and two assists for Germany.
Marc Michaelis and Matthias Plachta also scored while Ottawa Senators forward Tim Stutzle added two assists.Nicolas Roy was called for tripping 32 seconds into the period and Adam Lowry went to the box for cross-checking just 25 seconds later. Plachta cashed in on the resulting 5-on-3 power play.
The Germans narrowed the gap to 5-3 on another two-man advantage. Seider scored 12:35 into the third with Josh Anderson and Morgan Geekie in the penalty box.
"We are all still learning how each guy on our team plays since we all come from different NHL teams, but overall I think we played well," Senators defenceman and Canada captain Thomas Chabot said.
"We gave up two power-play goals in the third period to make the game closer than we would have liked, but special teams play is something we can keep working on."
