When Derrick James, the highly acclaimed trainer of unified junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo, looks backs on his fighter's exciting -- yet equally disputed -- split draw against WBO champion Brian Castano last summer, one key stretch in particular comes to mind as it pertains to Saturday's rematch.

Castano (17-0-2, 12 KOs) outlanded his opponent and connected on a higher percentage of punches in their 154-pound undisputed championship bout in San Antonio but was forced to withstand the storm of a Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KOs) rally in the championship rounds.

In the end, one judge scored it 114-114, while the other two scored it 117-111 for Charlo and 114-113 for Castano, in a fight many observers felt the native of Argentina had done enough to win.

"This is the funny thing about it, Brian Castano was who I thought he was going to be. But he was only able to be that guy because of Jermell Charlo," James told "Morning Kombat" in April. "It wasn't about how great [Castano] was or wasn't, it was about the fight that Jermell Charlo posed to him and gave him. When you look at the last four rounds, [Castano] was on the run because Charlo was on the hunt.

On May 14, Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano will look to settle it all in the ring. Competing at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, Charlo and Castano will once again fight to determine who will be the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring light-middleweight champion.

Charlo made his pro debut in 2007. He beat John Jackson in '16 for the WBC light middleweight title. After losing the title to Tony Harrison in '18, Charlo won it back the next year. Charlo beat Jeison Rosario in '20 for the WBA, IBF and The Ring light-middleweight titles.

Castano made his pro debut in 2012 after winning a gold medal in the South American Games. He won the interim WBA light-middleweight title in '16. Promoted in '18, he fought Erislandy Lara to a draw for the title in '19. He was later stripped of the belt after not fighting mandatory challenger Cedric Vitu. In '21, Castano beat Patrick Teixeira to become the WBO light-middleweight champion.

Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano are going for undisputed, but where do the other contenders at 154 pounds stack up?

With a black cowboy hat atop of his head, Brian Castano stood in his locker room in dismay. The WBO junior middleweight champion thought he did enough to win, and the overwhelming majority of the public agreed. Yet after 12 grueling rounds with Jermell Charlo for the undisputed 154-pound championship, the fight was declared a split draw.

"I feel that they robbed me," Castano told ESPN in Spanish through a translator in July. "I'm not taking anything away from Charlo: he's a big puncher, he caught me with some good punches at times, but I survived."

Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano meet again for the undisputed championship of the world at 154 lbs.

Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano keep the run of big fights rolling, as the top two junior middleweights in the world meet once again, this time looking to give us a definitive winner and crown an undisputed 154 lb champion after their draw 10 months ago.

Along with the Charlo vs Castano main event, the show will also feature top rising welterweight star Jaron “Boots” Ennis taking on former Olympian Custio Clayton in an IBF eliminator at 147 lbs, and will open with a 10-round bout at junior featherweight between Kevin Gonzalez and Emanuel Rivera, a Mexico vs Puerto Rico battle.

If we start out like that, you may not see the last four rounds or may not see the full 12 rounds. We have to start out the fight different and be a different individual. Castano is who he is. He's a pressure fighter and if you let a guy be himself, you can't beat him."

The 31-year-old Charlo has already predicted the rematch, which takes place this weekend at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California (Showtime, 9 p.m. ET), will end in him knocking Castano out.

Luckily for Charlo, a native of Houston who is the twin brother of WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo, he has history redeeming himself in big rematches after bouncing back from a disputed decision defeat against Tony Harrison in 2018 by stopping him late in their rematch one year later.
