The Western Balkans

Impunity Watch in the Western Balkans

More than 20 years after the end of the conflict, impunity for the crimes of the 1990s remains widespread throughout the Western Balkans and continues to undermine victims’ demands for justice. With no physical presence in the countries, we work closely with our partners on the ground and focus our interventions on strengthening civil society to enable its more meaningful participation in policy development and implementation, and on linking the fight against impunity to prevention of future conflict.

Within our work on the Western Balkans, also maintain a specific focus on Kosovo, where we seek to enhance the positive societal impact of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and the Special Prosecutors Office, based in The Hague, engage in policy work around the Commission for Truth and Reconciliation, and support civil society to push for a comprehensive politically informed transitional justice strategy.
