In this photobook (“Portraits of the Past and Present: Preserving Memories through Photography and Storytelling”), elderly Burundians from four provinces recount stories of their lived experiences of key moments throughout Burundi’s history, as well as their hopes for Burundi’s future.

This is a generation victimised by colonial and ethnic violence, independence struggles, dictatorial regimes, and the country’s civil war. The photobook documents their memories of periods in Burundi’s past that are often hidden or ignored, preserving them for future generations to learn lessons from the past, understand their history, and prevent violence from recurring. The photobook calls on the power of visual art and storytelling to assist in processes of recognition and mutual acceptance, and in representing the nuanced collective memories of Burundians.
