To tackle structures of impunity, we believe that affected communities must better understand and participate in transitional justice processes.
In Burundi, we ensure the participation and involvement of victims of violence in these processes, in particular women and girls. We also bring together young people and their elders for constructive dialogue about the past, and support individual and collective trauma healing.
Our innovative and participatory research methods have enabled us to shed light on the impact of conflict within communities and become a reliable source of objective information in the country.
We started engaging in Burundi in 2010 by monitoring the post-conflict election process, working with local civil society organisations, and mapping the needs and desires of affected communities for transitional justice. We opened an office in Bujumbura, the country’s economic capital, in 2011.
