Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how societies document atrocities, seek truth, and preserve memory, but transitional justice (TJ) has been slow to grapple with its implications.

This first-of-its-kind global mapping analyses more than 40 initiatives across four continents to understand how AI is already being used in evidence analysis, memorialisation, open-source investigations, as well as a range of other AI and technology-driven initiatives.

The report reveals a field innovating quickly but without shared ethical standards, raising urgent questions about power, consent, inequality, and the risks of misrepresentation. It offers a comprehensive foundation for collective learning and calls for the development of responsible, victim-centred principles to guide the use of AI in transitional justice.
