On 17 May 2026, Gabriel García Luna took office as Attorney General for the 2026–2031 term. His election represents an opportunity to restore the independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, following the disastrous tenure of Consuelo Porras — sanctioned by more than 40 countries for undermining democracy and the rule of law.
The process of electing the Attorney General generated great anticipation both nationally and internationally; it was one of the most closely watched processes in history. The bulletin describes how the process was conducted and assessed, challenges faced, legal actions against the process, and citizen participation and international observation which were fundamental to ensuring transparency and reducing undue interference.
