On 24 January 2022, Guatemala’s highest court sentenced five former paramilitaries to 30 years in prison for crimes against humanity and sexual violence committed against Indigenous Maya Achi women in the municipality of Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, during the country’s civil war in the 1980s. The court also ordered 12 reparation measures for the survivors, their families, and their communities.
The 36 survivors participating in the Maya Achi women’s case sought justice for more than ten years. The case and verdict shows the incredible courage and perseverance of the women victims in the face of decades of legal obstacles and racial discrimination. This is a summary of the case in English.
