Conflict and violence have far-reaching effects on individuals, communities and societies. These include often invisible emotional and psychological impacts of direct and structural violence. This is why mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) is an essential aspect of efforts to combat impunity, and a crucial way of making the fight against impunity truly victim centred. Specifically, MHPSS can help to actually achieve the ‘never again’ that the fight against impunity aims for, by contributing to ending these cycles of violence. Successful MHPSS efforts can help survivors of conflict to overcome their traumatic experiences and find resources and agency to mobilise. MHPSS can make formal transitional justice (TJ) processes more victim-centred and therefore more meaningful for survivors.
