In countries affected by conflict or authoritarianism, the security forces themselves represent a threat to democracy, as they can be among the violent actors that commit human rights violations.
Militarised masculinities reinforce ideas about specific gender roles assigned to men, including the use of weapons, the exercise of violence, and the promotion of aggressive, misogynist, and authoritarian behavior to exercise command and control over the population. In this report, we examine the risk of militarisation that has taken place in the last decade in the National Civil Police in Guatemala, and the negative impact it has on women’s lives.
