Research brief – Victim-defined justice: Lessons learned and recommendations

This research brief explores how informal organising and victim-defined justice can foster change, enhance agency and facilitate community empowerment in justice processes and beyond. It is based on our overview report on victim participation in informal processes. It includes summaries from just two of the six case studies, from Colombia and Syria.

Key lessons learned and recommendations include the needs to:

1. Prioritise organising by victims and survivors
2. Support political agency
3. Support agency across the gender spectrum
4. Meaningful inclusion in formal processes
5. Adapt support strategies to contexts of elevated risks
