Miguel Itzep, the coordinator of the National Victims’ Movement Q’anil Tinamit, is a victim of the Guatemalan armed conflict (1960-1996). He was kidnapped and tortured by the Guatemalan army in 1977. In this interview, he reflects on the reparations process for victims in Guatemala. He talks about the main obstacles in the pursuit of justice. He explains how the international community can support victims and concludes by telling us what motivates him to continue seeking justice.

Miguel was one of the speakers at the international conference ‘Victims: Front and Centre,’ organised by Redress and Impunity Watch in The Hague on 17 October 2019. The conference brought together policymakers with survivors of the conflicts in Guatemala and Guatemala to discuss how to ensure meaningful and effective participation in transitional justice processes.

The Q’anil Tinamit movement is composed of communities, other organisations, and victims; and seeks truth, justice, and reparations victims of Guatemala’s armed conflict.
