On the 17th of April 1975 the Khmer Rouge seized control of Phom Penh. Cambodia was officially named Democratic Kampuchea with Pol Pot as prime minister. In his effort to set up an agrarian society, millions were forced to leave cities and a quarter of the Cambodian population died of disease, starvation and wanton execution. A new generation of Cambodians are trying to confront a culture of silence.
