The Platform against Impunity in Guatemala welcomed the conviction of Ríos Montt for genocide on May 10, 2013. During a historic trial, Ríos Montt was sentenced to 80 years in prison – 50 years for genocide and 30 years for crimes against humanity committed against the Maya-Ixil population.
The sentence materializes years of demand and overcoming political and legal obstacles in order to give victims the right to have access to justice for massive and serious human rights violations. It is also the first time that such a sentence has been laid down against a former Latin American dictator by a national court. Read our press release in English.
