Sexual Violence in the Ixil genocide case in Guatemala
On 25 March 2024, a new trial began in Guatemala for the genocide against the Ixil Maya people during the armed conflict. In this case, General Benedicto Lucas García, former Chief Lieutenant of the General Department of the Army during the military dictatorship of his brother Romeo Lucas García (1978-1982), is accused of genocide, sexual violence, forced disappearance, and other crimes against humanity.
In the trial, nine survivors who suffered sexual violence at the hands of members of the Army have testified; the women recounted the horrific events they experienced during the military operations in their communities.
Impunity Watch, along with other organizations, is monitoring this highly significant trial for the country, which will continue in the coming weeks. In this report, we analyze sexual violence as part of the Ixil genocide, based on the facts of this case and national and international jurisprudence on the matter. La violencia sexual como parte del genocidio Ixil en Guatemala
El 25 de marzo de 2024, inició en Guatemala un nuevo juicio por el genocidio contra el Pueblo Maya Ixil durante el conflicto armado. En este caso se acusa al general Benedicto Lucas García, exjefe del Estado Mayor General del Ejército, durante la dictadura militar de su hermano Romeo Lucas García (1978-1982), por genocidio, violencia sexual, desaparición forzada y otros crímenes de lesa humanidad.
En el juicio han testificado nueve sobrevivientes que sufrieron violencia sexual a manos de miembros del Ejército; las mujeres narraron los hechos horrendos que vivieron durante los operativos militares en sus comunidades.
