A new report report Twice dispossessed: Housing, land and property rights of Palestinian refugees in Syria Yarmouk case study focuses on the means Palestinian Syrians have used to secure their housing, land and property (HLP) rights and the challenges they face. It aims to give more space to voices from Yarmouk Camp in Syria – not only as sources but also as producers of knowledge.
Impunity Watch and PAX supported the efforts of a team of Palestinian Syrian researchers to collect hours of first-hand testimony of the experiences of Palestinian Syrians: from its establishment in 1948 to the battles and sieges of the Syrian conflict post-2011, its occupation by ISIS and finally its re-occupation by the Syrian regime and near-emptying of its residents who had lived there for generations.
Palestinian Syrians face unique but poorly understood challenges with respect to their HLP rights, resulting from their unique legal situation in Syria as well as issues common to all Syrians, such as loss of documentation and the predatory policies of the regime.
The report presents recommendations to ensure Palestinian HLP rights in Syria are protected and violations are addressed in a participatory and comprehensive way.
