After 54 years of tyranny, Syrians have liberated themselves from the Assad regime and reclaimed their freedom and dignity. The Impunity Watch team wishes to congratulate the Syrian people on this historic occasion. We are deeply touched by the messages and images of Syrians reunited with their families after years, of displaced people returning home, and of prison doors finally opening to end decades of injustice.

In these crucial moments in Syria’s history, we remember those whose sacrifices paved the way for this change. Our hearts go out to the families still waiting for news about their missing loved ones.

Syrians have been subjected to grave and systemic crimes for many years. It will require an enormous effort to find truth, to ensure justice is served and that victims have access to reparations and other forms of support. With the hope and the challenges ahead, we will continue to stand by Syrian victims, survivors, and their families who seek truth and justice, and support the path of dealing with past injustices, healing, and transitioning towards the free Syria to which they have aspired.

Today, there is a new space for hope, opening the door for a Syrian-led victim-centered transitional justice process. We look forward to continuing down this road.
