Violence can only be prevented from re-occurring when its root causes are addressed. Many victim groups globally have identified militarised masculinities as one such root cause of impunity and gender inequality.

Come together and challenge our thinking beyond traditional frameworks of security – we will offer victim-led reflections on why transforming masculinities is crucial for durable peace, and imagine alternative pathways to justice efforts.

Moderator: Brandon Hamber is a member of the board at Impunity Watch, and an expert in transitional justice and integrating masculinities into conflict-prevention.
Panelists:
- Philipp Schulz is a post-Doctoral researcher at Bremen University, specialising in the gender dynamics of armed conflicts and political violence, with a particular focus on masculinities
- Anne-Floor Dekker is the Executive Director of the Dutch gender platform WO=MEN, which coordinates the National Action Plan 1325
- Christella Niyonzima is the Head of Programmes at Impunity Watch Burundi, and a transitional justice and peacebuilding practitioner who specialises in community-driven and gender-transformative approaches
- Jolanda Bosch is an assistant professor at the Netherlands Defence Academy (NLDA) and teaches Military Ethic, with research expertise on the masculine orientation of military organizations

Explain the dimensions, presenting key findings from forthcoming reports to understand the phenomenon and how it links to violence, the fight against impunity and security, and its relevance from a policy perspective - Panel Segment 2 – Practical Strategies and Transformation
Share real life examples on what can be done to overcome militarised masculinities, both at a grassroots and at an institutional level - Panel Segment 3 – What can be done?
An interactive discussion on strategies and entry points for the way forward. Examples will include victim participation in justice processes, educational/behavioral change at a community level, and masculinities training/s in institutions. - Audience Q&A to invite further reflections, and borrel reception to continue the conversation and networking
💡We will draw on reflections from our upcoming research on the ‘Linkages between Violent/Militarized Masculinities and Impunity’, co-funded by the Global Initiative Against Impunity and the European Union. This event is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supporting our objective of brokering knowledge between grassroots experiences and high-level decision makers to amplify victim participation in justice and accountability processes.
