On 30 August, to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Impunity Watch and the Platform for Victims of the Internal Armed Conflict honoured the 45,000 victims of enforced disappearances in Guatemala and held the forum Until we find them: Search of victims of enforced disappearances in Guatemala.
The forum was attended by Mika Kanervavuori, OHCHR representative in Guatemala, and Christine Pirenne, Ambassador of the Netherlands in Central America, who highlighted the importance of continuing the search for missing persons.
During the forum, representatives of the National Coordinator of Widows of Guatemala (CONAVIGUA), the Association of Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared of Guatemala (FAMDEGUA), the Association Memory, Dignity and Hope (AMDE) and the Mutual Support Group (GAM), shared their organisations’ experiences in the struggle to find their missing loved ones.
More than 100 people attended the event, most of them members of victims’ organisations, human rights organisations and students.
